In order, where it happened.
- 1
Palace of Fine Arts and its lagoon
Palace of Fine Arts
Begin at this 1915 rotunda, rebuilt in the 1960s, with swans and ducks on the lagoon. It is free to walk around and it is quietest on weekday mornings. The ruins-style colonnade makes a pretty first photo stop.
- 2
Presidio Tunnel Tops
Presidio Tunnel Tops
A short walk west brings you to this park built over the highway. There are lawns, picnic spots and an overlook toward the bay. It is a good place to sit for a moment before the long waterfront stretch.
- 3
Walk Crissy Field to the Warming Hut
Crissy Field and Warming Hut
Follow the restored shoreline path along Crissy Field, with Alcatraz across the water and the bridge ahead. The Warming Hut at the western end serves hot drinks and simple snacks, perfect for a coffee stop. Fog is common, so bring a jacket even in summer.
- 4
Fort Point beneath the Golden Gate Bridge
Fort Point National Historic Site
This brick Civil War era fort sits right under the south end of the bridge, which is a dramatic view from below. Entry is free, but it is usually open only Friday to Sunday, so check the National Park Service page before going. Windy corners and steep stairs, so hold the railings.
- 5
Sunset at Baker Beach
Baker Beach
Take the shuttle, a bus or a short drive to this wide beach with a postcard view of the bridge from the south. Swimming is unsafe because of strong currents, so enjoy the sand and the sunset instead. The Batteries to Bluffs trail above the beach gives bigger views if you have energy left.
