- 1
Balmy Alley murals
Balmy Alley
Start in the quieter southern Mission, where a narrow alley is covered with decades of community murals. It takes ten to fifteen minutes and is best in the morning when the light is soft. Be respectful, since people live here.
- 2
Lunch at La Taqueria
La Taqueria
Locals argue about the best Mission burrito, and this place is regularly named near the top. The version here is made without rice, so order a carne asada or carnitas burrito, dorado style if you like it crisp. Expect a line at lunch, but it moves quickly.
- 3
Clarion Alley Mural Project
Clarion Alley
Walk north to this lane of constantly changing political and artistic murals between 17th and 18th streets. It is free and always open, and the artworks change often, so every visit is different. Photograph with the street level in mind and keep an eye on your belongings.
- 4
Ice cream at Bi-Rite Creamery
Bi-Rite Creamery
A short walk away, the small shop serves ice cream known for salted caramel and honey lavender. There is nearly always a queue, but it is part of the fun. Take your cone across the street to the park.
- 5
Relax at Dolores Park
Dolores Park
This sloping park is the neighbourhood living room, with skyline views and on sunny days a crowd of picnickers. Bring a blanket and sit near the top of the slope. It is at its liveliest on warm weekends.
- 6
Mission Dolores Basilica
Mission Dolores
End with the oldest intact building in the city, founded in 1776. The small chapel and garden cemetery are peaceful and quick to see. There is a modest entrance fee.
