de Young Museum and the Hamon Observation Tower
de Young Museum
The art collections cover American art, textiles and more, and the free observation tower on the top floor offers a wide view of the park and city. The tower is open without a ticket on most days, so even a quick visit is worthwhile. Check which exhibitions are on before you buy.

California Academy of Sciences
Across the music concourse, this building has an aquarium, a planetarium and a living roof under one roof. A rainforest dome and the penguin colony are crowd favourites. Buy tickets online ahead to skip the line, and note it is the priciest stop of the day.

Stow Lake loop
Stow Lake
Walk or take a short ride west to this circular lake around Strawberry Hill. You can rent a pedal boat at the boathouse and see the waterfall and Chinese pavilion. It is a calm spot with ducks and turtles in the afternoon.

Sunset at Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach
Finish at the western end of the park where the city meets the Pacific. Eat early dinner at the Beach Chalet brewery upstairs if you want a view, and walk the sand at dusk. The water is cold and rough, so keep to the shoreline.
