    Start at Al Hisn Fort

    Al Hisn Fort (Sharjah Fort)

    Begin at the old fort that once guarded the ruling family and the town. Inside are old photographs, weapons and displays about Sharjah's history, and it is compact enough to see in about an hour. Go in the morning while it is cool and quiet. Opening hours are shorter on Fridays, so check before you go.

    Browse Souq Al Arsah

    Souq Al Arsah

    Walk a few minutes to the oldest covered market in the emirate, with small shops under wooden roofs. People come for silver jewellery, frankincense, dates, Arabic sweets and wooden crafts. Stop for Arabic coffee or tea in one of the little cafés for a proper break, and ask for prices before buying.

    Step inside Bait Al Naboodah

    Bait Al Naboodah

    This coral-stone merchant's house shows how a wealthy pearl-era family lived, with a shady courtyard, carved wooden doors and family exhibits. It is small and photogenic, and visitors like how calm it feels after the souq. Allow about 30 to 45 minutes.

    Visit Al Eslah School Museum

    Al Eslah School Museum

    This is Sharjah's first school, with old classrooms, desks and teaching tools laid out as they used to be. It is a short, easy stop that families enjoy, and it adds a human side to the history you have just seen. Check opening times at the gate.

    End at Sharjah Art Museum

    Sharjah Art Museum

    Finish with the large art museum nearby, which holds a good collection of 19th and 20th century Orientalist works and Arab art in cool, quiet galleries. It is a pleasant way to end the afternoon out of the heat. Check the Sharjah Art Foundation programme in Heart of Sharjah too, since rotating exhibitions are often free.
